2010 Northwest Traditonal & Primitive Archery Expo

Unfortunately we will not be having a 2010 event.  At this time we feel the economy has not recovered to the point where we can meet the expectations of the public, participants and the vendors.

We hope to establish a more formal entity in 2010 and be able to look to grant support for the venture in 2011; please check back to this website for further updates.   Fill out the form below if you would like to receive updates by email.

Dear Archery Enthusiast,

I am sad to announce that we have to cancel the expo we had scheduled for Memorial Day weekend 2009.  Unfortunately vendors for the event have cancelled at an alarming rate due to the economy. What we hear from them is that as most of them have a day job they are concerned that they may lose their job, or have lost their day job and are frightened to spend the extra money at this time to attend.  All of them have told us that they will attend next year if they can and we understand their dilemma. We at RCA believe that the American public is resilient, hard working and that our battered economy will recover. We are making arrangements to have the expo next year and if you watch the  www.nwtpa.com and the RCA www.rosecityarchery.com web sites you will see where we are in the process so that when we are ready you can make your reservations early. We actually could have had the expo, we were swamped by other (carnival type) vendors who wanted to attend, but they would have made the expo look like a garage sale and we are not going to do that. So I decided we will do it right and wait until next year.

Next year we will broaden up the focus of the expo to include other primitive and traditional skills and arts. We already have a taxidermist coming and outfitters, along with bowyers, some leather artisans and equipment suppliers, an artist and a sculptor and ALL of the vendors who were coming this year have expressed a desire to come in 2010. I would like to see some Black powder vendors and knives, optical, camo, clothing, boots and a couple of local Hood River people who want to be included. We have one sponsor for sure and a couple of other possibilities who will help insure we have the finances to make it all work, by broadening up the focus we will be able to fill up the booths with vendors, I just don’t think there are enough archery vendors out there to handle an event like this and by expanding we will insure that the vendors who put in a lot of time and cost to attend will have a show to attend.

The Mongolian and Medieval people who will put on some shows, the Ishi expert, the Native American encampment, the Tipi group and Atlatl guy have all said they will come next year. They all feel strongly that the education of the public is what they do and they want to do it in 2010. We hope to find even more experts to educate and give seminars to all who are interested and where better than Hood River County to learn the history of Oregon and the Northwest. If you want to get a head start read a series of books called “Thunder Over The Ochaco’s” and you’ll be glad you did.

Archery will still be the focus of the expo, just not all of it, by broadening up the amount of activities, events and vendors, we will get what we want and that is to give archery a boost, educate the public and to put on an event we can all be proud of, one that will draw folks back every year.

John Strunk reported that he had his bow building classes filled up and that he will attend next year. I apologize to the people who had signed up, but we did everything possible to make it work.  The arrow building classes were almost filled up and maybe we can expand both of those items to get more people involved.

So there you go, thank you for your support. See you in 2010.
