Northwest Traditional & Primitive Archery Expo
We invite you to the North West Traditional and
Primitive Archery Expo
2011 in Hood River, Oregon USA. This will be the premier event covering
archery in the Northwest for the last thousand years. It will be educational
and entertaining for both kids and adults. The top crafters and
companies in traditional archery & hunting gear will have booths with the
best products available. If you are into archery or ever thought about
getting into archery, this is the event you need to attend.
We are pleased that Martin Archery will have a booth
with Gail Martin, Dan Martin and Larry Hatfield attending in person. Gary Rathbone will also be attending displaying his
awesome broadhead collection.
There will be Medieval horseman, The Seattle Knights
of Seattle, Washington
with an exhibition of archery in full coats of armor and chain mail along
with seminars on who, what, where and why of Medieval times. There will be
Horseback Jousting in full armor, sword and other hand to hand fighting, and
Ladies in Waiting; Archery with audience participation. All Seattle Knights
participants will be in costumes depicting the particular time in history
they represent and will roam the grounds between exhibitions to answer
questions. There will be two or three horse back exhibitions and there
will be two or three seminars daily to describe what they are doing and to
educate the audience on the period in time they represent. Bring the kids
this is stuff they need to know about the true history of the world as it
was, plus they will love it. There will also be a booth for the audience to
visit that has information and some artifacts to share. There will be ten
participants and six horses. The horses are highly trained before they can
participate in these exhibitions and the fighters, archers and jousters have
taken years to acquire the expertise to participate.
There will be Mongolian Horse back archers, Pacific
Horde, of Sisters,
Oregon putting on demonstrations of their skills with the
bow and arrow with real Mongolian gear and they will be in full costume of
their particular period in time and place they represent. These archers
participate in tournaments all over the world and some have been awarded
gold medals from the different archery associations, in the different
countries that they attend, recently there was a world championship in
Korea. There will be parts of the exhibitions for the audience to
participate in. There will be seminars on Mongolian archery and what life
was like a thousand years ago for the Mongols, Dr. Holm Neumann who is a
world renowned authority on the subject will conduct the seminars and they
will have a booth to show off their artifacts and to answer questions. Bring
the kids they will love it and they will get educated at the same time.
These folks will be in costume from the era they represent as well. There
will be eight horses and eight riders for the riding exhibits. The horses
are highly trained to be involved in these exhibitions and it takes years to
get a horse or a rider ready.
We are fortunate to have Kate a world renowned
horse woman who does competitive horse riding where she will stand up in the
saddle while the horse is in full gallop and she will actually stand on her
head while at full gallop as well. She has an unbelievable repertoire of
tricks she performs, mounting and dismounting at full gallop and archery as
well from horse back, this you have got to see. Kate competes all over the
world and is at the top of her class. Again bring the kids they will love
this.
Another world renowned expert, Mr. Don Day will build
a Native American Cedar Plank house at the event, this house will be 10’
wide and 20’ long. Mr. Day is a Tribal Elder Cultural Protection Specialist
of the Confederated Tribes of the Grande Ronde and teaches at universities
all over on Native American dwellings As well as a well known flint knapper
who actually is the only person able to knap the
Australian Opal successfully. Don will have a booth to show his wares as
well as do seminars for the three days of our event. Don will be glad to
answer (at his booth) questions and help the fledgling flint knapper with
advise. Here again bring the kids and let them learn about the indigenous
peoples of the North West and what life was really like. Don is from
Stayton, Oregon.
Steve Allely is an expert on the
Native Americans from
the northern California area and into the entire North West coastal region.
The Indian named ISHI who was the last survivor of the Yahi tribe in
northern California. Steve has a collection of ISHI memorabilia that he
shows and gives talks about; he actually has a collection of the real stuff
that was once ISHI’s. Steve has replica items that he produces and will have
seminars on the subject and will be available at his booth for questions.
ISHI became a friend of Dr. Saxton Pope in San Francisco and Pope became one
of the most famed archers of the early 20th Century who hunted
all over the world with a Mr. Art Young and they authored some of the most
famous and exciting books on archery ever, Steve can tell you all about it.
Steve’s home is in Sisters, Oregon when he is not traveling the world giving
talks on this subject.
There
will be an all Traditional and Primitive archery shoot hosted by the Apple
Knocker Archery club in Hood River, Oregon, so you can go to shoot arrows at
forty “three D” targets during the expo.
There will be about 70 vendors in the three buildings,
about 25 each in the Community and Summit buildings and the rest in the
Floral Building and outside. In the Community building there will also be a
food court with sandwiches, soups, hamburgers and hot dogs, soft drinks,
beer, wine and other good stuff. The information and First Aid station will
be inside here as well. There will be bow makers from all over the country
and vendors with leather goods and clothing, camo hunting and casual wear,
archery accessories, knives, taxidermy, hunting and fishing guides for the
Northwest, a couple of muzzle loaders, hunting and fishing agencies, Rocky
Mountain Elk Foundation representative, Primitive Archer Magazine and
Traditional Archery Magazine, Oregon Hunters Association and many others who
you will be able to access from this web site and see where their booths
will be. There will be seminars ongoing and we will cover every part of
archery we possibly can and the history. We intend to make this a learning
experience for all ages with entertainment thrown in to keep everyone
excited.
In the Summit Building along with 25 vendors there
will be a drink booth with Espresso, Latte”, soft drinks, cookies and
rolls,
also information. There will be arrow building classes for kids
and adults, these will be conducted by Rose City Archery the largest Wooden
Arrow manufacturing company in the world, they also sponsor the expo. There
will be a first aid booth in the building.
In the Floral Building there will be “bow building”
classes with John Strunk, he only has ten spots available so get in early if
you want to make your own bow. John has been doing this for decades and is
considered the expert you want to learn from. There will be about eight
vendors in the Floral Building.
There will be demonstration using the Atlatl a
primitive device for throwing a dart which was a prelude to the bow.
Bob Kitch will be the man doing the demo’s and giving talks on the subject.
The audience will be allowed to throw the Atlatl and see just what a great
hunting instrument it was (is). Bob will have a booth where you can become
the proud owner of your very own Atlatl, custom made for you. Bob’s booth
will be at the entrance to the expo, in the fairgrounds. He will be happy to
answer any Atlatl questions you may have.
Scattered around outside the buildings we will have
ten or fifteen vendors as well as the Pacific Horde, Seattle Knights, Steve,
Bob Kitch and Don Day; we will also have at the Floral Building a Bow and
arrow shooting area for the kids (Free) and they can shoot to their little
hearts content. In the same general area we will have the bow testing area
for the adults; see a bow and like it, take it out to the test area and give
it a try, buy it and take it to the shoot. Sounds like a good way to spend
the day.
There will be prizes given every hour the expo is open,
with a couple of really good ones a couple of times a day. Breakfast will be
available from 10 am to 11 am every morning in the Community Building and a
vendor dinner with

here and at the show, if you want to hobnob with the vendors
and the Medieval and Mongolian folks. Featuring whole roast pig as the main
entrée’ with all of the fixin’s and desert cooked by Coleen Sloan with cast
iron cook ware and Dutch Ovens from Camp Chef.
This NW Archery Expo will all take place in Hood River, Oregon. We have rented the entire Hood
River County Fair Grounds in Odell, Oregon for the event. If you wish to
camp you can do so right on the fair grounds, there will be a fee of $25.00
per night including water and power, there are showers right at the camp
area and a free dump station on the grounds. All camping must be paid for in
advance or an additional fee of $5.00 per night will be added on for the
inconvenience. The camp grounds are suitable for anything from a 40 ft motor
home to a tent; everybody pays the same as the fee is for the site. We all
have to follow the rules imposed by the county and the grounds close at
10:00 pm each night. You can stay for up to one week 18th through the 25th, if you want to make a
vacation of it and it is a great place for a family vacation. Hood River is
a beautiful spot in the Columbia George about 60 miles east of Portland,
Oregon on Hwy 84, one of the prettiest places in the entire country. Check
